Marikana Documentary Wins Big at the 43rd International Emmy Awards

A documentary about the August 2012 Marikana Shootings, fittingly named Miners Shot Down, has won an Emmy for Best International Documentary. The film was directed by South African Rehad Desai and has won numerous awards including the Human Rights Jury Award and the Jury Award for Best South African Documentary.

Now that the documentary has scooped up this major award, South African’s might be able to see it either on SABC or e.Tv. SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago told the City Press last year that they had spoken to Rehad Desai in May of 2014 about airing the documentary. However, they refused to play the documentary about the excessive force used by police until the commission investigating the massacre was complete. Since the commission is officially over, will we be seeing the documentary anytime soon? Unfortunately, we don’t have a clear answer. SABC now claims that they can only air the documentary once they have an opening slot.
The e.Tv network has said that they would gladly play the documentary if that’s what Rehad Desai wanted. But for now, those of us with internet, can check the documentary out on YouTube.
